“Jewelry”
on the Checkers Board: From Champion to
Outstanding Athlete
Amidst the common
perception of checkers competitions,
many are familiar with the image of men
intensely analyzing the game. Ms.
Warisara Butkham (Jewelry), a female
student from Ubon Ratchathani province,
has proven that
“determination” can
beautifully overcome limitations and
preconceived notions. She won the
women's checkers championship and
received the Outstanding Athlete award
at the “Inthanin Games” of
Maejo University. This success is not
just about the trophies, which represent
outstanding achievements on the checkers
board. But it is also a testament to the
effort that began in childhood.
Her
story didn't start on a big
competitive stage, but rather with a
small checkers board at home and simple
lessons from her "mother," who
was both her inspiration and first
teacher.
++Checkers Board and
First Teacher in
Life++
"Jewelry," a student from Ubon
Ratchathani province, became acquainted
with checkers when she was in the fourth
grade of primary school. During her free
time after school, her mother would
often invite her to play checkers
together in a simple way. Each move was
not only a fun game, but also a lesson
in analytical thinking, planning, and
patience.
As her interest in the game
grew, "Jewelry" began
researching and practicing more on her
own through online resources, especially
checkers technique tutorials on YouTube.
Repeated self-practice allowed her to
gradually improve her skills. Even
without a professional coach or formal
training ground, her determination kept
her from stopping her learning.
For a
young girl at that time, competing in
checkers was not just a leisure
activity, but also had an important goal
hidden behind it. "Jewelry"
intended to compete hoping to win prize
money to help alleviate her mother's
financial burden. This small act of
determination became a major driving
force for her to practice
seriously.
++First
Championship Changes Life's
Path++
After continuous training, a significant
opportunity arose when
"Jewelry" participated in a
provincial-level checkers competition.
The competition was filled with more
experienced players, but she was
undeterred by the challenge. With
concentration, carefulness, and honed
skills, she won each game, eventually
securing the Roi Et provincial
championship. This was her first award
as a checkers athlete. The victory not
only brought her pride but also served
as a crucial encouragement, confirming
that her efforts could lead to
success.
++A Student's
Unceasing
Development++
Currently, "Jewelry" is
a second-year student in the Human
Resource Management program, Faculty of
Management Science, Suan Sunandha
Rajabhat University. University life is
full of new challenges, including
academics, faculty activities, and
sports training. Despite the many
responsibilities, she manages to balance
her time effectively. Her academic
performance has consistently been good,
while she continues to diligently
practice her checkers skills. Balancing
studies, training, and faculty
activities has become a crucial skill
she has developed alongside her athletic
pursuits.
Her effort and dedication
on the competition field... This led her
to win the women's checkers
championship and be recognized as an
outstanding athlete for her achievements
that brought fame to the
university.
++From Athlete to
Knowledge Sharing++
Beyond her roles as a
student and athlete, "Jewelry"
also serves as a checkers coach for
those interested, especially young
people who want to learn this game. For
her, checkers is not just a game of
victory, but also a tool for practicing
concentration, analytical thinking, and
systematic planning. Sharing her
experience with the younger generation
is another source of pride in her life.
She believes that with proper training
and support, checkers can develop into a
wider competitive arena and may be a
significant opportunity to achieve
success in life.
++Lessons
from Victory++
Even with her success on the
competitive field, "Jewelry"
still holds onto a motto that constantly
reminds her:
"Never stop
developing yourself on the day you win,
because if you stop developing, that may
open the door for competitors to surpass
you while you are complacent with your
past victories."
This motto
reflects not only the perspective of an
athlete but also the attitude of someone
who is always ready to learn and improve
themselves.
++Inspiration
from a Small Board++
From a little girl in Ubon
Ratchathani province who started
learning checkers from her mother. From
a champion to an outstanding athlete
today, "Jewelry's" journey
is a testament to her effort, gratitude,
and self-belief.
On the chessboard, every move
requires thought and decision-making,
just as the path of life requires
determination and
perseverance.
For
"Jewelry," Ms. Warisara
Butkham, the game continues, along with
her dreams that never stop moving
forward. This is reflected in the
reminder she has always held onto:
victory is not the end, but merely
another step in developing herself to be
even better.
