From
“Royal Residence” to
“Building 56”
Did you
know? The Suwaphak Niwet Building at the
Faculty of Management Science holds a
history far richer than what meets the
eye today.
You might walk past this
familiar building every day without
realizing that this very site was once a
royal residence for members of the Royal
Family within Suan
Sunandha.
“Suwaphak
Niwet” was originally a large
royal residence in Suan Sunandha and the
home of HRH Princess Suwaphak
Wilaiyaphan. She was the 10th daughter
of King Chulalongkorn (Rama V) and the
second daughter of Chao Khun Phra
Prayurawong (Chao Khun Chom Manda Phae
Bunnag).
She was born on May 2, 1873,
and passed away at her residence in Suan
Sunandha on July 30, 1930, at the age of
57.

From
Royal Residence to “Building
6”
The original structure was a
two-story masonry building featuring a
central projecting section (portico).
The ground floor consisted of a spacious
veranda and an entryway leading to the
upper floor, while the second floor
featured a room within the projection,
complete with a balcony for enjoying the
surrounding atmosphere.
Over time,
the original building—which had
served as student
accommodation—was demolished. It
was replaced by a new four-story masonry
building, which subsequently became
known as “Building
6.”
This name persisted until
the tenure of Khunying Krongkaew
Pathumanon as the College Director. This
building has been officially
named
“Suwaphak
Niwet”
A name that reflects
the story and deep connection this place
shares with the history of Suan
Sunandha.
In the past, this building
housed the Thai Language Department
before transitioning into the Office of
the Faculty of Management Science;
today, it is widely known as
“Building 56.”
The
building we see every day is, therefore,
not merely a place for study or work,
but a chapter of Suan Sunandha’s
history passed down from generation to
generation.
For to truly know the
“place” where we are
is
to gain a deeper understanding of the
“story” of Suan
Sunandha.
